What Goes Up (Must Come Down) is a song sung by Face 9000 in the episode, What Goes Up...

Lyrics[]

What goes up
(Whoopsie whama mama)
Must come down
(Oh, hama mama)
What goes up
(Mmm, whama-sama)
You know it’s gotta come down

Face 9000:
It’s the thing that keeps us down
(We can’t see it but it)
Keeps us on the ground
(It’s got a hold on every)
Tree and rock and flower
(Don’t you know they’re feeling)
Gravity’s pulling power!

Jet, Sean, Sydney, and Mindy:
Ooh, gravity’s a force of attraction
Even though you can’t see it in action

Face 9000:
It’s stronger than stormy weather
(It’s the force that’s holding)
Every little thing together
(When you’re having fun and)
Playing on the teeter-totter
(It’s gravity that makes you)
Come down like you oughter

Jet, Sean, Sydney, and Mindy:
Ooh, it’s the Milky Way’s glue
The solar system too
Everything has it
From the stars, to me and you

Face 9000:
A planet like Earth has lots
(It’s gravity that keeps us)
Hanging on to what we’ve got
(Don’t you know I mean the)
The ocean and the atmosphere-a
(I’m trying to tell you that it’s)
Gravity that keeps them here-a!

Jet, Sean, Sydney, Mindy, and Face 9000:
Remember the Earth’s way bigger than you
It’s gonna want to keep you stuck to it too
So launch your saucer, let ‘er rip
But it’s gonna take force to break gravity’s grip

Face 9000:
Gravity’s rule is this, my friend
What arises, must descend

Jet:
You mean, what goes up, must come down?

Face 9000
Yes!
(When gravity’s around)
Ooh!

Jet, Sean, Sydney, and Mindy:
What goes up
(Whoopsie whama mama)
Must come down
(Oh, hama mama)
What goes up
(Mmm, whama-sama)
You know it’s gotta come down

Trivia[]

  • The PBS Kids and TamingGaming (affiliated with Wind Dancer Films) YouTube channels calls this the "Gravity Song". The official title comes from the Solar System Songs soundtrack album.
  • Sunspot seemed to be singing some lines in the song.
  • This song was sung again in Moon Circus, with some new footage added and re-recorded vocals by the new actors of the children.
  • The Arabic, Korean, and Turkish dubs replace Sunspot’s gibberish lines in the lyrics with actual phrases.
    • In the Sinhala dub, his lines are replaced with "ooby dooby dooby."
    • In the Uzbek dub, his lines are replaced with "na na na na na."
  • The Russian dub of this song is notorious for being initially dubbed without any auto-tune, and for being very off-beat and off-key. When the song was redubbed in season 2, auto-tune was added, but to an extreme extent which rendered some of the vocals robotic-sounding.
  • The Uzbek dub of this song keeps the first line in English.
  • Foreign dubs of the song are notorious as a whole for having errors and oddities with the autotune. The only foreign dubs that get the song right and don’t screw up the autotune are the Korean and Spanish dubs.
  • In the Cantonese dub, the song is left in English like all the others, but the spoken lines “Gravity’s rule…” to “Yes!” are dubbed.
